Description
Most people have wondered at least once in their life how skyscrapers are built and how they stay standing through windstorms and earthquakes. Almost everyone I know in Seattle was fascinated by the tear-down of the viaduct, Big Bertha’s drilling, and the construction of the new 99 tunnel. How can a tunnel underground hold the weight of an entire downtown on top of it without caving in?! And I’m still wrestling with the understanding of how wi-fi actually works... I used these wonderings to put together a simple after school club that would teach kids some general vocabulary and concepts of construction while tackling engineering and design challenges. I want kids to be exposed to different types of engineering (structural, mechanical, software, robotic, civil, biomedical, etc.) and to become familiar with the engineering design process. Kids will explore, build, and test their creations each session while being inspired by each other.
